L Shaped Office Desk Planning: How The Office Shop Builds Corner Workstations That Actually Fit

Nov 4 2026
Modern private office with an L shaped office desk facing a bright window

An L shaped office desk looks like an easy decision. You get two worksurfaces and a corner that finally does some work. Then the desk arrives. The return is on the wrong side, the chair bumps the wall, and the monitor ends up facing a bright window.

The Office Shop has planned corner workstations for Ontario businesses since 1996. Every L shaped office desk we supply starts with space planning and design, so the room, the role, and the desk agree before anything is ordered. This guide covers where L shaped desks go wrong, how we plan them, and the collections we recommend.

The Office Shop is headquartered at 366 Denison St in Markham and serves businesses across the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario and Canada. We work with more than 60 manufacturers and hold premium dealer status with Global Furniture Group and Groupe Lacasse.

Common Mistakes in Choosing an L Shaped Office Desk

Most problems The Office Shop sees with an L shaped office desk come from one habit: the desk gets picked from a product photo, and the room gets considered after delivery.

The return is on the wrong side. A left return and a right return are different products. Order the wrong one and the user either faces the wall with their back to the door or reaches across their body all day to use the phone and the printer.

The desk was sized for the catalogue, not the room. A 72 inch main surface with a 48 inch return looks generous in a showroom. In a 10 by 10 private office, it can leave too little space behind the desk to pull the chair out, let alone get past it.

The corner turns into dead space. On many retail desks, the corner is just where two tops meet. It’s too deep to reach comfortably, so it collects paper, cables and a box of old files.

The monitor lands in the wrong spot. Screens set facing a window pick up glare. Screens set off to one side make people twist their neck for hours. Both problems start with where the desk sits in the room.

Power and data don’t reach. The outlet is on the opposite wall, so cables end up running across the carpet and become a trip hazard.

Retail construction loosens at the joint. Desks built for light home use often rely on thin connectors where the return meets the main top. With daily commercial use, the corner starts to sag or wobble within a year or two.

Nothing matches when the team grows. A single desk bought online may be discontinued by the time you hire again. New staff get a different style, finish and height, and the floor starts to look pieced together.

→ Have corner desks in your office turned into clutter traps or uncomfortable workstations? Ask The Office Shop to review your current setup and recommend a better layout.

Which L Shaped Office Desk Configuration Fits Each Role? How The Office Shop Decides

The right L shaped office desk depends on the person, the room and how the space is shared. These are the configurations The Office Shop plans most often.

Desk with a return

This is the classic layout. A full depth main desk, usually around 30 inches deep, connects to a narrower return of about 20 to 24 inches. The main surface handles computer work and the return holds a printer, reference material or a second work zone. It suits most individual roles and fits a standard private office well.

Desk with a corner extension

Instead of a square corner, a curved or angled extension joins the two surfaces. This gives the user a comfortable spot to work right in the corner with a monitor tucked into the angle. Analysts, designers and anyone running two or three screens often prefer it.

L shaped workstations in open plan areas

In open offices, an L shaped office desk often becomes part of a panel system. Each person gets a corner workstation with screens for privacy, and stations connect in pods or runs. Choosing between office cubicles and open benching is one of the first decisions in these projects.

Height adjustable L shaped desks

A sit stand L shaped office desk can raise the whole corner or just the main surface. Full corner lifts use three legs and a frame designed for the angle. A more budget friendly option pairs height adjustable desks for the main work zone with a fixed return beside it.

Compact L shaped desks for small rooms

Home offices, consult rooms and small private offices often need a footprint near 48 by 48 inches. A compact L shaped office desk still gives the user separate zones for a laptop and paperwork.

→ Not sure which corner desk layout suits each person on your team? Send The Office Shop your floor plan and headcount for a configuration recommendation by role.

How Does The Office Shop Plan an L Shaped Office Desk Around the Room?

Here is the process The Office Shop follows when a project includes corner desks, step by step.

Step 1: We learn the room and the role. Through our office furniture consulting service, a consultant measures the space and talks with the people who will use it. We note doors, windows, columns, baseboard heaters, and outlets. We also ask how the person works, including screens, paper, meetings, and time spent standing.

Step 2: We choose the return side from the room, not the catalogue. The user should be able to see the door without turning around, and screens should sit at a right angle to windows to cut glare. Those two facts usually settle which side the return goes on. Visitor seating comes next, since guests need a clear spot across from the user.

Step 3: We size the main surface and the return. Main desks commonly measure 60 to 72 inches wide, with returns of 36 to 48 inches. We fit the combination to the room and leave enough clearance behind the desk for the chair to roll back and for someone to walk past. A common planning target is around 36 inches behind the desk, and more in shared areas.

Step 4: We plan the corner and the screens. We decide where the main work zone sits, on the long surface or in the corner, then set monitor positions and arm mounts to match. A corner extension makes corner screens comfortable. A square corner usually works better with the monitor on the main surface.

Step 5: We map power, data and storage. Grommets, power modules and cable trays get placed where the equipment will actually sit. Pedestals go where they won’t block the chair, often under the return. For roles that keep a lot of paper, we plan the drawer layout the same way we do for any office desk with drawers.

Step 6: We draw it, then build it. Every L shaped office desk is drawn to scale in CAD and shown in 3D, so you can see the layout before ordering. Our crew then delivers, assembles, and levels each desk through our office installation and reconfiguration service.

How Does The Office Shop Make an L Shaped Office Desk Comfortable to Use?

More surface can mean more reaching and twisting. Through our ergonomic solutions service, The Office Shop plans comfort into each layout instead of fixing it after complaints start.

The keyboard and main screen face the user. The most common mistake on an L shaped office desk is setting the keyboard on one surface and the monitor on the other. We keep the primary task directly in front of the user so their head, shoulders and hips line up.

The chair has to swivel freely. An L shape works because the user turns between two surfaces. That only happens with a chair that swivels and rolls easily, plus clear floor space under both sides. Looking at the best ergonomic office chairs helps narrow the options, and we check arm height against the desk so the chair tucks under without hitting the edge.

Desk height suits the person. Standard fixed desks sit around 29 to 30 inches, which is too high for many shorter users. An adjustable keyboard platform or a height adjustable main surface solves this without changing the whole desk.

Monitor arms free up the corner. An arm clamped near the corner lets the screen float over the deep part of the desk at the right viewing distance.

Good ergonomic office furniture works as a system, so we plan the desk, chair, screens and lighting together.

→ Are employees twisting in their chairs or squinting at screens on corner desks? Ask The Office Shop about an ergonomic review of your workstations.

What Makes The Office Shop Different From Buying an L Shaped Desk Online?

Plenty of websites sell an L shaped office desk. The Office Shop adds the planning, sourcing, installation and long term support that keep it working.

We aren’t tied to one manufacturer. With more than 60 manufacturers available, our consultants pick the L shaped office desk that fits the room, budget and timeline. Premium dealer status with Global Furniture Group and Groupe Lacasse gives clients access to two of Canada’s best known commercial lines.

We specify commercial construction. A commercial corner desk uses stronger connectors at the joint, thicker worksurfaces and finishes that resist scratches. That keeps the corner level and solid for years of daily use.

We plan the whole floor at once. Private offices, workstations and storage are planned together, so corner desks share finishes with nearby team areas.

Our own crew installs it. The team that plans the layout also delivers it, connects the return, levels the surfaces and routes the cables. When something needs adjusting, you call one company.

We stay involved after move in. As teams grow, The Office Shop can add matching desks, flip a return to the other side when someone changes offices, or move corner workstations through an office furniture reconfiguration. If you’re still weighing where to buy commercial office furniture, that ongoing support is worth factoring in.

→ Tired of corner desks that wobble, sag or don’t match the rest of your office? Ask The Office Shop for commercial options that fit your budget.

The collections below are desk lines The Office Shop supplies, plans and installs as L shaped configurations across Ontario. Most come in several sizes and finishes, and a consultant can lay them out side by side in your floor plan.

Groupe Lacasse Concept 300 Office Desk

The Groupe Lacasse Concept 300 Office Desk is a practical choice when many people need the same L shaped office desk. Desks, returns and pedestals come from one family, so a whole floor of corner workstations can look consistent. Its clean style suits offices on a sensible budget.

Groupe Lacasse Concept 400E Office Desk

The Groupe Lacasse Concept 400E Office Desk has more contemporary lines. Returns, bridges, hutches and pedestals from the same collection let The Office Shop build a manager’s L shaped desk and nearby workstations from matching parts.

Groupe Lacasse Quad Office Desk

The Groupe Lacasse Quad Office Desk uses simple rectangular shapes with a mix of wood grain laminates and metal accents. The same components build private offices and team layouts.

Groupe Lacasse Morpheo Desk and Workstation

The Groupe Lacasse Morpheo Desk and Workstation collection covers individual desks and team workstations, so private offices and open areas can share finishes.

Groupe Lacasse Nex Office Desk and Nex Height Adjustable Desks

The fixed height Groupe Lacasse Nex Office Desk pairs with the Groupe Lacasse Nex Height Adjustable Desks. The Office Shop often combines a sit stand main surface with a fixed return for an affordable L shaped office desk that still lets people stand.

Global Office Desk Dufferin

The Global Office Desk Dufferin collection combines real wood with laminate, glass and steel. It suits client facing offices that want a warmer look. Dufferin comes from Global Furniture Group, one of our premium dealer partners.

Global Princeton Office Suites and Global Zira Executive Suites

For leadership offices, the Global Princeton Office Suites and Global Zira Executive Suites offer larger desks and returns with matching storage. Planning a full leadership office goes further than the desk itself, and executive desk selection covers credenzas, storage walls, and meeting space.

Krug Millennium, Vestrada and Adesso Desks

Krug offers several desk families through The Office Shop, including the Krug Office Desk Millennium, the Krug Vestrada Desk, and Krug Adesso Desks. These suit senior staff offices that want a premium look.

Which Industries Does The Office Shop Furnish With L Shaped Office Desks?

Every sector uses a corner desk differently, so The Office Shop adjusts each L shaped office desk to the work it supports.

Corporate and professional service firms. Law firms, accounting practices and real estate offices use L shaped desks where people split time between screens, files and client meetings. Our commercial office furniture work covers private offices, open plan workstations and meeting rooms on the same floor.

Financial establishments. Banks, credit unions and wealth management firms often place advisors at an L shaped office desk so a client can sit across while the advisor works on screen. The Office Shop has a dedicated practice for financial establishments that plans these layouts with lockable storage.

Healthcare organizations. Consult rooms, clinic administration and nursing stations need compact corner desks with surfaces that are easy to clean. The Office Shop supplies healthcare office furniture for clinics, dental offices and hospital administrative areas.

Educational institutions. Faculty offices, guidance rooms and school administration benefit from the extra surface an L shape provides. Our educational institutions practice plans these spaces for schools, colleges and universities.

Startups, technology firms and coworking spaces. Developers and designers running several monitors often prefer corner desks. In shared spaces, operators use L shaped workstations for private offices and dedicated desks, an approach that fits well with coworking space furniture planning.

Home offices. Many employees now work at home part of the week. The Office Shop’s home office furniture range brings commercial quality L shaped desks into spare rooms and basements.

Where Does The Office Shop Deliver and Install L Shaped Office Desks?

The Office Shop delivers and installs desks across Ontario from our Markham headquarters. The team regularly works in:

We also serve Bolton and support projects elsewhere in Canada.

An L shaped office desk needs careful assembly: the return must sit level with the main surface, and the corner joint must be tight. The steps our crew follows for office furniture installation include leveling every surface and testing every connection before we leave.

When new desks are part of a move, The Office Shop’s moving and relocation management service coordinates delivery around your move date. Many commercial desk lines are made to order, so placing furniture orders early belongs near the top of any office relocation checklist.

→ Moving offices and worried the new desks won’t be in place when your team arrives? Ask The Office Shop to build desk delivery into your move schedule.

What Else Can The Office Shop Help With Beyond an L Shaped Office Desk?

A corner desk is often the first item on a larger project list, and the same team can handle the rest.

Open plan teams may need office benching systems alongside private offices with L shaped desks. Growing companies often choose modular office furniture so desks and returns can be rearranged as departments change. Our design team also plans boardrooms, reception areas and lounges.

→ Planning more than new desks for your next office project? Ask The Office Shop for one plan that covers the whole floor.

Choosing an L Shaped Office Desk With The Office Shop

A good L shaped office desk puts the return on the right side, leaves room to move, and keeps the main task directly in front of the user. Most problems with corner desks come from choosing the product first and thinking about the room later.

The Office Shop works the other way around. Our consultants measure the space, decide the return side and size, plan screens, power and storage in CAD and 3D, compare options across more than 60 manufacturers, and install everything with our own crew. You end up with corner workstations that fit on day one and adapt as your company grows.

L Shaped Office Desks From The Office Shop: FAQs

Which L shaped office desk collections does The Office Shop carry?

The Office Shop carries corner desk collections from Groupe Lacasse, Global, Krug, Watson, Three H, National and other manufacturers. Popular lines include Groupe Lacasse Concept 300, Concept 400E, Quad and Morpheo, along with Global Dufferin. With more than 60 manufacturers available, our consultants can match the L shaped office desk to your style, room and budget.

How does The Office Shop decide between a left or right return?

A consultant looks at where the door, windows and outlets are, and where visitors will sit. The user should see the door without turning, and screens should sit at a right angle to windows to reduce glare. Those details usually decide the return side.

What size L shaped office desk does The Office Shop recommend for a private office?

Many private offices fit a main desk of 60 to 72 inches with a return of 36 to 48 inches, while compact rooms may suit something closer to 48 by 48 inches. The Office Shop measures the space and leaves enough clearance behind the desk for the chair and for walking past.

Can The Office Shop supply a height adjustable L shaped office desk?

Yes. The Office Shop can plan a full corner lift, where both surfaces rise together, or a lower cost setup with a sit stand main surface and a fixed return. Options include Groupe Lacasse Nex, Watson Seven and Three H Up Side, and we confirm the frame and base for each corner before ordering.

Does The Office Shop install L shaped desks on site?

Yes. Our own crew delivers, assembles and levels every desk, connects the return to the main surface, and routes cables between the two sides. If anything needs adjusting later, you call one company.

Can The Office Shop match a new L shaped office desk to our existing furniture?

In many cases, yes. Our team checks your existing collections and finishes and sources matching desks and returns where the line is still available. When it isn’t, we suggest coordinating finishes so new and existing furniture look consistent.

Which areas does The Office Shop serve for L shaped office desk delivery and installation?

The Office Shop is based in Markham and delivers across Ontario, including Toronto, North York, Mississauga, Vaughan, Brampton, Oakville, Burlington, Newmarket, Barrie, Kitchener/Waterloo, Ottawa, London and Sudbury. We also support projects elsewhere in Canada.
